I never knew my grandfather, who died before I was born; but from what my father said, he was a very good and beloved man. I once asked my dad for his definition of success, and he shared reminiscences of his own father: a farmer all his life, mostly a sharecropper, and when he came in from the fields in the evening his children would fight over who got to remove his muddy boots.
William Lonnie Newman fell from a logging truck and broke his neck when he was 53 years old. He lingered for three days before he died. I believe the hole left in my own father's heart was still there when he died nearly 50 years later. |
