I don't have much information on William Arthur. Family lore says that William had been working his fields when a sudden summer storm came up, and he took a break beneath the overhang of a shed to wait it out. His 8-year-old son, William Lonnie, was reportedly seated on the ground between his legs. He suffered no apparent injury when a lightning bolt hit the shed, killing William Arthur as he sat leaning against one of the posts.
From The Abbeville Chronicle, Thursday, June 21, 1906: "Mr. Arthur Newman, a farmer living about 3 miles from Abbeville, was struck by lightening and instantly killed Monday afternoon while stacking oats in his field. His wife was with him and was shocked, though not seriously. She and several small children survive him and they have the sympathy of the entire community." In the 1910 census, Susie was living in the 1158th Militia District, Wilcox County: Susie, 33; Nannie, 14; Lonnie, 13; Alice, 10; Mira (sic), 7; John R., 5; Louise, 3; Margaret Gibbs, mother, 52; Willie Gibbs, Margaret's son, 15. |
