Although not generally known or discussed among her children and grandchildren (probably because she was so well-loved and regarded), Susan was born several years before her mother, Margrett, married John Gibbs. It's not known whether John Gibbs is her father. Susan used her mother's maiden name of Scaff when she married in 1892.
William Arthur died after being struck by lightening in 1906. In the 1910 census, Susie was living in the 1158th Militia District, Wilcox County: Susie, 33; Nannie, 14; Lonnie, 13; Alice, 10; Mira, 7; John R., 5; Louise, 3; Margaret Gibbs, mother, 52; Willie Gibbs, Margaret's son, 15. |
