According to Johnny F. Sutton (see Sources), after their marriage, Henry and Anna farmed in Thompson Township, near the South Carolina state line. In 1891, they moved to Georgia and settled in Wilcox County. They were likely looking for better opportunities, as history records that Robeson County was then stagnating economically. And they did prosper in their new home, as their family continued to grow. Unfortunately, like many other people, they lost everything when the stock market crashed in 1929. That didn't deter them; their children were grown but their home was still a favorite for the grandchildren. Henry Frank and Prudence Anna are both interred at Morningside Cemetery in Rochelle, Wilcox County, Georgia.
The 1860 Robeson County census includes Prudence, 1 (she would turn 2 in a couple of months) and her brother Burrill, 6 months, with their parents, Kenneth and Elizabeth Britt. In the 1880 Robeson County census, Henry and Prudence Anna are living in Thompson Township with their children John K., 1, and Loyd M., 1 month. Anna's younger sister, Martha Britt, was visiting during the time the census taker came, so she is listed in this household as well as that of their father, Kenneth Britt. Prudence Anna's death certificate lists her mother as Martha Parker (informant was her son, Charles Otis Sutton); however, census records and Kenneth Britt's will confirm her name as Elizabeth. |
