According to Johnnie F. Sutton (see Sources): "John Caleb Sutton was a farmer and carpenter, first in Georgia and then Florida. He also operated a tug boat on the St. John's River, towing barges of groceries and citrus fruits from Crescent City to Jacksonville. He has been described as a short, wiry man, full of energy. He played a guitar and harmonica and loved to sing and dance."
In the 1910 census John Caleb (Caley) and his family were living in Wilcox County: John C., 28; Mary L [Lula], 27; John F., 7; Lula B. [Blanche], 4; Deli I., 2; Donnie M., 10 months. Living with them was Caley's younger brother, William T., 17. |

Children with Mary Lula Ray:
John "Caley" was said to disappear for long periods of time, only to suddenly reappear for a spell, sire another child with Lula, then leave again. My grandfather, Johnnie French, told my mother that Caley's and Lula's last child together was born and died during one of Caley's absences; the baby apparently got old enough to run through the sheets as they hung from the clothesline, and leave small, muddy handprints on them. When Caley next returned to the family farm, French told his father not to even dismount from his horse, and that was the last Caley's Georgia family ever saw of him. French and his brothers went to their father's funeral in Florida in 1937; their mother had died the year before. When some of French's uncles suggested Caley be buried next to Lula, French nixed the idea, saying that since he hadn't lain by her in life, he shouldn't lie by her in death. Children with Daisy Isabella Baxley:
The two sets of children sired by John Caleb Sutton developed close ties over the years following Caley's death. |
