Ignatius Anderson was also known as Asa, Nat and Wheeler, the latter reportedly due to his talent for "wheeling and dealing". He reportedly owned Jaybird Springs, near Eastman, Georgia, during the Civil War; this hot springs recreational area has been a favorite site for family reunions for many years.
Nat (about 11) was living with his widowed mother in Screven County in the 1830 census. He then apparently followed his older sister Gordian and her husband James L. Dowdy to Telfair, where he met and married Rebecca. Nat and Rebecca were still living in Telfair in 1840, showed up in Marion County in 1850, and were back in Telfair for the 1860 census. Their son, Robert, married there in 1867. The newlyweds moved with Nat and Rebecca to Pulaski County, where Nat's youngest daughter, Rebecca, got married in November 1870. There's a John Anderson who married a Nancy Sharber in Telfair in 1839. It's not known whether there's kinship between John and Nat, or Nancy and Rebecca, but John and Nancy also showed up in Marion County in the next census, and named their first daughter Rebecca. I couldn't find them after 1850, so I don't know any more about them. Nat fought with the 12th Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, entering and leaving as a corporal. Nat and Rebecca are buried at Brown's Cemetery in Chauncey, Dodge County, Georgia. Their names appear as Ignaciaus and Rebecer on their gravemarkers. Their son, Robert, and his wife, Georgianna, are buried in the Zion Hope Baptist Church cemetery in Chauncey. Their son, James Lewis, who died at 4, is buried next to Nat and Rebecca. My sincere thanks to Anne Conner Rousseau for the pictures of the gravemarkers and all the other helpful information on this family. |
