Hezekiah added the K. to his name as an adult, and was mostly known as HK thereafter.
HK is buried in Stubbs Cemetery in Abbeville, Wilcox County, Georgia. According to his gravemarker, he was born in 1847; however, he gave his age as 61 in the 1910 census, which would make it 1849. In that census, he also reported having been married for 43 years, which is consistent with the marriage records found in Wilcox County. According to family lore, HK had a drinking problem; his father-in-law, Thompson Nathaniel Statham, reportedly bequeathed land directly to his daughter's children so that HK couldn't get his hands on it. HK's gravemarker also says that he fought in the Civil War, 14 Oct 1864 through 9 Apr 1865. Records variously show him as having been in either Co. F, Georgia Reserves, or Co. B, 25th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry. The Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia CD notes that this company was successively designated as 1st Co. B, 2d Co. D and 3d Co. G. Also according to the Roster, HK's military service was as follows: 2d Sergeant 10 Aug 1861; Retired 5 May 1862; enlisted as a private 5 May 1862; absent, sick, 30 Nov 1862; no later record. The May 1862 retirement/enlistment information may explain the discrepancies already noted around which company he was in. His pension application is linked below, as is the widow's application filed by Sarah Jane after HK's death. Census: 1850 Marion County, Georgia: Asa Anderson, 29; Rebecca, 30; Wm. F, 11; James, 9; Allyi Ann, 7; Robert, 3; Hezekiah, 1. 1860 Telfair County, Georgia: Ignatius Anderson, 41; Rebecca, 52; James, 19; Abby (sic), 16; Robert, 14; Hezekiah, 11; Rebecca, 8. 1870 Telfair County, Georgia: Hizakiah (sic), 21; Sarah J., 20; Julia, 3; Thomas, 4M; Daniel McDuffie, 72, works farm. 1880 Wilcox County, Georgia: Hes. K., 31; Sarah Jane, 30; Julia A., 12; Thomas, 11; James, 9; Rebecca, 4; Alice, 2M. 1900 Laurens County, Georgia: H. K. Anderson, 51; S. J., 51; Mary P., 20; Jennie, 14; Helen, 10; Willie (F), 6; Jim, 8; Frank Ganis, 66, boarder; J. T. Cooper, 40, boarder. H. K. is working a farm he owns. He and Sarah Jane had been married for 33 years, and 9 of their 14 children were surviving. 1910 Wilcox County, Georgia: Hezekiah K. Anderson, 61; Sarah J., 61; Hellen, 21. Sarah Jane reported having given birth to 14 children, with 9 still surviving. 1920 Wilcox County, Georgia, living with daughter and son-in-law (should be Wester): Dennis Weston (sic), 36; Helen (sic), 29; Robie L. (F), 5; James A., 4 9/12; Francis (sic), F, 2 9/12; Frank, 1 7/12; Hessie K. Anderson, 74; Sarah Anderson, 74. Hezekiah died in December following this census. |

Children with Sarah Jane Statham:
In the 1880 census, Mary Pearl is shown as Alice, 2 months old, born in April of that year; in the 1900 census, Mary Pearl is shown as born in April 1880. I had information in my database on a daughter named Fannie who married James Turner, but no further information. As I did not see a Fannie in any of the census records I found, I'm assuming this is an error, unless she was born after the 1880 census and married by the 1900. |
